Burl Houses (houses of error/malformation/tumor) offer a distorted version of birdhouses—anthropomorphic objects tied to the human idea of providing refuge for birds. Here, the houses take on an ambiguous and threatening appearance with their sharp and incisive forms. The geometry of these models is inspired by the architecture of John Hejduk, a theoretical architect who envisioned a forthcoming, visionary, and animated architecture: each construction possesses a life, a dynamism, a spirit, a vibration, and seeks to blur the ontological boundaries between the human world and that of other species.
Some parts of these “houses” are also covered with various types of burl veneer, a material highly valued in fine woodworking for its peculiar shapes and beautiful appearance—but which originates from abnormal tree growths caused by parasites or other external agents, a kind of tree tumor.
The house, as a space of shelter and belonging, is presented here as an ambivalent place that invites us to rethink our relationship with the environment by questioning anthropocentric structures of power. Rather than offering a warm and protective home, these sculptures seem to signal a more complex relationship between human and non-human forces—forces that are inextricably intertwined and that affect each other in deep and often problematic ways.
